Medicare Rebates
- Medicare provide each client with ten rebates per calendar year.
- The rebate is 98.95, from from 1/7/2025
- This is claimed after your invoice has been paid.
- You can continue beyond ten psychology sessions in one calendar year and can use private health insurance if eligible for ongoing rebates.
- Ten more Medicare sessions are available in the following year for each client.
- Medicare do not allow rebates for Couples therapy sessions.
- Medicare do not allow rebates for cancellation fees
Referral Letters
- Medicare require your doctor to provide a referral letter on letterhead (not using a form) for your rebate.
- These are reviewed at the end of six sessions.
- If you change psychologists, you can still use the same referral letter (even if it has another psychologist’s name on it) as that letter is for your therapy and treatment needs.
- A Medicare Rebate does not mean that Betty will bulk bill the session. It means you will receive a $98.95 rebate on the session fee.

Getting More Medicare Rebated Sessions
Medicare has changed the number of sessions over the years from 12 to 18 to 20 to 10. It is confusing and unhelpful. Since 2020, my membership body AAPi has strongly advocated for 40 rebateable sessions (not 10) and for the rebated amount to be $150 (not 98.95).
